How to check blood pressure at home

Free printable blood pressure log (PDF)

How to check blood pressure at home is a measurement habit, then a writing habit. The cuff takes the reading. A log is where the reading goes so a week of numbers can be read together. Blood Snap is that log — a personal diary, not a blood pressure machine and not a diagnosis.

Public home-monitoring guidance (including descriptions from the American Heart Association) repeats the same setup: rest first, supported posture, a cuff that fits, and more than one reading. Your clinician's instructions override a general article.

Before you check

  • Empty your bladder. Sit quietly for about five minutes.
  • Skip caffeine, exercise, and smoking in the 30 minutes before, unless your clinician said otherwise.
  • Use an upper-arm cuff that matches your arm. A cuff that is too small often reads high.
  • For cuff fit and monitor choice, see how to track blood pressure at home and home blood pressure monitor and cuff.

How to measure blood pressure at home

  1. Sit with your back supported, feet flat on the floor, and legs uncrossed.
  2. Rest the arm on a table so the cuff is at heart height. Keep the arm still.
  3. Place the cuff on bare skin, in the position the monitor's instructions show.
  4. Take a reading. Wait about a minute. Take a second reading.
  5. Write the time, systolic (top), diastolic (bottom), and pulse if the monitor shows it.

Use the same arm each time so the series is comparable. If the two readings are far apart, follow the monitor manual and your clinician — do not average away a reading you were told to keep.

What to write in the log

A useful home check includes date, time, both pressures, pulse, and a short note (after medicine, poor sleep, a different cuff). The what to write in a blood pressure log guide lists those fields. If you want paper first, use the free blood pressure chart printable (PDF log).

Morning and evening

Many short home assignments are one pair of readings in the morning and one pair in the evening, before the next plan is made in clinic. That is a schedule to confirm with your clinician, not a rule from an app. More detail is in how often to check blood pressure at home.

After the check: keep the series

Paper is enough for a week. A blood pressure tracker app is useful when you want the same fields on your phone, a chart of numbers you entered, and a PDF for the visit. Blood Snap does not label a reading Normal or High.

Educational information with public guideline citations. Not medical advice and not a diagnosis. Blood Snap is a personal wellness diary — not a medical device. Always follow your clinician's advice.

Questions about this guide

Sit quietly for about five minutes, use a cuff that fits your upper arm, keep your back supported and feet flat, then take two readings a minute apart. Write both numbers and the time. Blood Snap stores that log; it does not take the reading.

Log the numbers you just read about.
